Using your diesel P/U as a power source for generator
I have a early 2000 diesel pick up that I wondered if it could be used as a power source for a generator. Found this unit and wondered if anyone had heard of it before?
It uses a PTO that is on my model of transmission(didn't even know it was there before today) and the 125lb. generator head mounts to your chassis. They have 2 models 12kw & 15kw. http://www.realacpower.com/ |

Do you need that much power? for work? emergency?
For vehicle emergency or occasional use power, a simple change to a deep cycle battery and an inverter can do wonders for your temporary needs. |

I like it, the only thing I would be concerned about is what wear and tear daily driving would have on the gen head.
Or dirt/grime/water, etc.. given that it will be under the frame... |

I would figure out a way to put it in the traditional winch spot and get it a nice cover. That way it is easy to use and protected better. Plus your PTO was designed to go to a bumper area (front or back) anyway.

Two things to consider...
Most truck PTO boxes have needle bearings and are not designed for constant duty. Regulating the RPM on any generator is quite a task. The truck engine is probably not equipped with a variable speed governor and even if it was it would not be able maintain plus or minus 5 hertz. |
Re: Using your diesel P/U as a power source for generator
If you go to the FAQ of the website it says that the PTO/engine speed is controlled by my model of trucks computer(Chevy Duramax). It also states that fuel consumption @ 50% load of the 12kw unit is around .67 gph @ around 1100-1200 rpm. I would use it for main power backup for my property in Florida after extended power outages due to storms. A truck idleing in the driveway sure beats the noise of a gas 3600rpm genset running. Plus a 12kw unit would run A/C's. But, after alittle more research found that installed pricing is around $5000-6000. Yikes!!! I can put together a nice Lister diesel genset for alot less than that.
